Welcome Reception parents

A huge welcome to our new Reception children and families. It’s been great to see the children settle in their classes this week. We have had some great feedback from new parent/ carers about our transition package which we have supplied this year.  We are pleased to see the positive results of the range of activities which the children and parents have been involved in this year

Less congestion on routes to classes

Thank you for spending more time on the playground in the morning before 8.40am. This has avoided congestion for children coming into classrooms and children can now come in safely.

Please can I remind parents to encourage their child to park up their scooter/bike in the racks provided on entry to school and not to ride across the playground to prevent accidents.

New Office Administrator

We are pleased to announce that we have appointed Mrs Louise Spendlove as our new Office Administrator who will start in the office after half term.  We had an overwhelming amount of applications and are confident we have chosen the best person who will be that happy friendly face or voice at the end of the phone!  She will begin after half term. Meanwhile you will see Claire Pitts, Helen Rowson (Wednesday and Fridays) and Amber Carter in the office to support you. As you know Claire and Amber are new to the office team and are doing amazingly at learning the systems but please bear with them if they need a little more time to find out information etc.

We have a child with a severe nut allergy and therefore please can I remind you that nuts including peanut butter cannot be in packed lunches.

It is important that your child comes to school every day when they are fit and well. Every day matters; every minute matters. Holidays taken in term time are unauthorised. We held a meeting last year to review the ways we reward outstanding attendance each term. Our FLO Sam/Attendance Advisor and Claire FLO/Attendance Advisor for Kennington Academy will be sharing this information as well as guidance on absence and attendance in the form of a leaflet very soon. Our target is to achieve at least 96% as an outstanding school.

As you should be aware we use ParentMail as our way to communicate with you as a paperless school.  The instructions on how to add the parent mail app on a mobile device which will make this communication system more effective can be found on their website with the following link:

If you have any problems please come into the office or email  office@downs-view.kent.sch.uk

Results end of year 2017-2018

We are proud of our results from last year, meeting our targets set and being above or in line with national expectations.  We are particularly proud of our Maths attainment at end of year 2, especially with the number of children exceeding national expectations, achieving greater depth. This is a strength of the school with mastery Maths fully embedded.  Mr Horne is a Maths Mastery specialist and is part of a national project to improve the teaching of Mathematics.  He has led training for teaching staff which is having a positive impact on teaching and learning. Our amazing results are due to the hard work of the pupils, all staff and you as parents, supporting learning at home.

Priorities for 2018-2019

As part of one of our training days at the start of this term we have set our priorities for the year.  All staff and Governors were involved.  This year some of the priorities we will be focusing on are:

  • Improving children’s language skills
  • Ensuring that reluctant writers use writing toolkits to improve their confidence in writing
  • Strengthening the ways Governors monitor the school to ensure the achievement of the highest standards
  • Ensure all children make outstanding progress from their starting points through providing an exciting personalised curriculum.

The EYFS team are all so proud of how well the children have started to settle into school. This week we have been out exploring the school environment learning where everything is and beginning to make new friends. We have been reading stories about starting school and have even enjoyed learning a song about our class animals. Please come in and see the peg labels your children have made where they have been consolidating their cutting and sticking skills.

We would also just like to thank you for enjoyable home visits and hope you found them useful.

Year 1

What a busy week Year 1 have had! We have been enjoying learning even more facts about our class animals in English, we now know at least 3 different types. Starfish class’ favourite was the chocolate chip starfish, I wonder why?!
In Maths we have been practising sorting things into groups and counting the amount. During PE this week we had great fun moving in different ways around the hall to “Under the Sea” music.

Following designing a sea creature costume this week in small teams we are really looking forward to making them next week. Please check your parent mail with ideas for things you could send in to help us resource this. We look forward to sharing the results with you.

Year 2

Wow! What a great first full week it has been! We have discussed the story of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. We have explored, generated and used descriptive language to describe our own chocolate bar that we had planned. We thought about the coating, layers and any exciting pieces that might be in the middle. We had lots of amazing creative ideas!

In Maths we have discussed 2-digit numbers and have represented these in many ways such as Dienes and the Part-Part-Whole model.

In RE we have begun thinking about what is important to us and linked this to what is important to Muslims and what they believe. We are settling in well and are excited to learn even more in year 2!
