What we’ve been up to………….

In EYFS we have been looking at another Community Hero, Police. In Literacy we used our adjectives to describe Police Officers and tried hard to write these adjectives in simple sentences i.e. He has a tall black hat. We call our adjectives our ‘wow’ words. During circle time we thought about stranger danger. We learnt that anybody that we do not know is a stranger and that they can be male or female, young or old. We learnt not to talk to, accept gifts or go off with strangers. In Maths we learnt about the importance of dialling 999 / 112 in an emergency. We found these numbers on a real telephone keypad too. We then continued dialling different sequences of numbers on the keypad and used manipulatives on a tens frame to record the biggest / smallest number in the sequence.

Please can I remind those of you who have still not bought back their P.E kits that we need these in school as we in P.E were are using apparatus and school clothes are not appropriate clothing for this type of P.E!

Year 1 have been learning all about different animals habitats in both English and Science this week. We have drawn and discussed our own diagrams and considered questions such as what may happen with a change of weather and also whether the animal is always completely safe in its habitat, thinking about predators.

In Maths we have been learning new strategies to help us when adding 2 numbers which bridge 10. We have been using the tens frame to help us practically solve these calculations. In Art we’ve enjoyed painting the background of our jungle pictures, by carefully holding the paint brush.

We look forward to showing you our amazing handwriting at our workshops- we hope you enjoy joining in with our learning!

Year 2 have had messages from the Secret Author Agency (ssshhh it’s a secret). Setting them challenges linked to writing their own fairy tales. They have been amazing authors this week! In Maths we have continued our learning about division using the grouping method. We have linked our knowledge of multiplication and shown our understanding of the inverse of these two mathematical concepts. We have applied our knowledge whilst solving problems with multiplication and division. In Geography we were sent a letter from Horrid Henry asking for a map of our playgroup. So we explored perspective to decide that an aerial view perspective is better for creating a map. In computing we have practised our photography skills when taking photos of our toys, thinking about focus and zoom. In PE we have practised our throwing skills discussing the effective throw for accuracy and distance. I wonder if any year 2 children could practise their throwing skills at home?

STOP PRESS: Huge budget cuts to schools

You may have heard on the news that there have been huge cuts to school budgets and there’s worse to come. This has had a dramatic effect on Downs View already which has meant cut backs on staffing and resources. We want to ensure that we provide those extra special moments and experiences for your child, beyond the curriculum but this is becoming increasingly difficult without the budget we are used to.   This is why fundraising events are so important to bring extra money for expensive items such as i-pads.

The Friends are very proactive in doing the following to support the school:

  • Setting up a ‘Just-giving’ page which we hope will be well supported by relatives and friends of children at Downs View.
  • A range of exciting events for your child to take part in- some of these are listed above but more details will follow soon.
  • Family/adult events after school
  • Sponsored events – sponsored bounce our first one on Thursday 22nd

(More details will follow soon)

We are always trying to think of other ways to save money or increase funds. Some suggestions are as follows:

  • Donations from local companies of resources eg paper, card, stationary, sanitary products, pens, pencils, creative resources, paint etc.
  • Registering as a school for local supermarkets to support – ie Waitrose/Tesco schemes
  • Class donations boxes – where parents can donate items on a wish list to each class

If you have any other ideas or know of any bids we can make for money please let us know.

Please, please, please support us as best you can.  We are trying to be as creative as we can to raise more funds for Downs View so that we can continue to supply unique and exciting opportunities for your child which go beyond the normal curriculum.
