Sports Picnic

On Friday August 10thfrom 11:00 – 13:00 we will be holding a joint sports picnic, with Kennington Academy, in the EYFS area of Downs View school.  The Children’s Centre will be joining us for parachute games and other fun activities, and will be able to talk to parents and carers about other holiday events.  Please bring a picnic, and something to sit on.  Please note, in the event of bad weather, this event will be cancelled, and a message will go out on Facebook.   We look forward to seeing you, Claire and Sam (Family Liaison Officers).

What we’ve been up to……

This week in EYFSwe have been reflecting and evaluating our learning from this year. We have thought about and wrote our favourite memory remembering to use a conjunction, adjective and all punctuation in the correct places. We have been on a voyage of discovery in Maths locating objects in different positions using the correct positional language. We have had fun in music creating our own body compositions and shared them with our friends. Don’t forget to ask your child to play theirs to you at home! We have also had fun as a year group playing a variety of team games.

We have had a really enjoyable first year at school and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and wish you a lovely summer break.

Year 1 We have really enjoyed our last full week in school and have continued to work hard across the curriculum. In Maths, we have continued our work on time by have been recapping half past and o’clock. We then went onto comparing time by thinking about earlier and later, quicker and slower. During English we enjoyed writing an adventure story about our journey around the school. We have then gone on to look at other stories about journeys and completed story tables to help us recall them in order. We have learnt how to insert an audio clip in ICT this week onto a Powerpoint which we are then going to share with the rest of our class. We have all had lots of fun and learnt so much in year 1 and can’t believe it is coming to an end. We wish all our Year 1s a lovely summer break and look forward to seeing them all grown up as year 2s in September.

Year 2 We hope to see you all Monday for our end of year show! We have been busy rehearsing and trying to make it spectacular for you! We can’t wait! In English we have written our own Marvellous Medicines that George can give to Granny. In Maths we have designed and created our own board games using mathematical knowledge. We have had fun playing them with our friends! In Religion we have explored various religious books and some stories that feature within them. We have learnt that the Bible, Qu’ran and Torah all have stories with meanings to take from them on how to be a better person.

As you should be aware children are teacher assessed at the end of EYFS and year 2 and compared with other schools nationally.  We are very proud to have achieved fantastic attainment for the end of EYFS and Year 2 where we will be in line or above national expectations.

An amazing year…

Well another exciting year has passed by so quickly. It’s been a real privilege to watch your children grow and make amazing progress. There are many successes to celebrate for all children. At Downs View we celebrate talents and life skills as much as reading, writing and Maths.  Your child’s report reflects the hard work and effort your child has put into his/her learning.  Your support at home accelerates this further so thank you for taking time to do this regularly.

Farewells and Welcomes

As we come to the end of the year may I take this opportunity to say goodbye and good luck to year 2 who will be embarking on a new exciting journey as they move on to year 3. They have left a mark at Downs View which will stay with us forever. A fond farewell to families who are leaving us with their last sibling in year 2, with many who have been with us for many years.  Please keep in touch – you will be greatly missed. Enjoy the summer break and for those families remaining with us, we look forward to seeing you in September.  Have a happy and safe summer holiday – keep that learning up at home and enjoy some precious family time!

We said a sad farewell to Mrs Drage our Business Manager this week. Miss Allen is leaving Downs View next week to return to Ireland to be with her family. They both have shown dedication and commitment to Downs View and we wish them every success for the future.

We are also saying goodbye and good luck to Mrs Green, Ms Ferguson, Mrs Burch, Mrs Buss and Mrs Ireland who have been with us during this year.  Again they have worked so hard and will be greatly missed and we wish them all well for the future.

We have appointed a new Business Manager, Jacqui Brown, who we will welcome on board in September.

Summer holiday maintenance/works

Over the summer holiday we will be having the front office and entrance re-vamped to make the area more secure and accessible for families. We will also be having phase 1 of the KCC work completed to make our boundaries and gates more secure. The other phase requires planning permission which is pending. Mr Beaney will also be involved in maintenance work at the front of the school, painting and repairing the boarding etc. as well as ensuring the school is very clean and refreshed.

Plea for Pebbles /Cobbles

Other exciting work includes the front of the school where every child and member of staff will be involved in painting a large pebble (Cobble) which will form part of an underwater scene based on a fantastic story.  Please can you send your child in with a pebble or cobble in September. Year 2 have painted theirs and they are ready to be laid over the summer. Watch this space!

We hope you will notice a huge difference in September!
