What we have been learning………

In EYFS we have been thinking about our Mums and people that are special to us. We thought about the different ways that we could show them that we care about them and love them and how to make them feel happy and special. In our Literacy lesson we put our ideas down on paper but can’t tell you too much more as we don’t want to spoil the surprise! Just remember that it is from the children’s own ideas and imagination! In Maths we have continued exploring the ‘part, part, whole’ method to record number calculations. However this week we focused on using the vocabulary take away, minus, subtract, equals, total. It was amazing how many chocolates we recorded that our mums had eaten!

In P.E we have been continuing to learn to balance on different body parts. We transferred these balances onto low apparatus and used our jumping skills to help us to dismount.

Year 1

We had so much fun on our school trip yesterday to Wingham. We saw lots of amazing animals and enjoyed a workshop to further our knowledge. We were really impressed with how the children remembered the animal facts we have learnt this term as we went around. This week in English we have loved reading and retelling the story of “The Dinosaur who Pooped a Planet”. The children were very excited when we announced that, yes it was ok to write about poo! They practised retelling the story first with a story table and then by writing the story out using the key language from the story. In Maths this week we have been learning how to compare objects by measuring them using the language longer, taller and shorter. We then started to measure using non-standard units such as paperclips to see how long something was. In RE this week we explored places that are scared to us. The children enjoyed talking about and drawing places that are special to them and make them feel safe; such as their bedroom or Nanny’s house. We have also enjoyed sharing mothers’ day activities with lots of Mums, Nans and friends this week and really hope you like the end product!

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have been super creative and written shape poems about the story of Alice in Wonderland. We thought about which object or character we wanted to base it on, we generated descriptive language then wrote our poem in that shape. In Maths we have begun to explore time, first recapping o’clock and half past, then learning quarter to, quarter past and 5 minute intervals. We showed our reasoning by solving many different time related problems. In our let’s explore day we have learnt about maps in Geography. We explored aerial view and have made our own journey sticks and 3D maps of the forest school. Thank you to those of you who attended our mothers’ day activity!

Mothers’ day activities

Thank you to all the Mums/Nans/Carers that attended the mothers’ day activity this week. The children really enjoyed creating their frames and spending time with you; we have some very creative children and mums! We hope you liked the added surprise in the frames.

Mothers’ day gift sales

Thank you to the fantastic team work this week by The Friends of Downs View and all the parents who supported them to make the sales such a success. Thank you for the amazing donations.  We hope that those of you who took part in this enjoy their gift; carefully chosen by your child.

Book week

The children have enjoyed reading and enjoying a range of books this week.  Thank you for all families who took part in the book quiz.  We had lots of entries with the correct answers.  Three winners were picked from these. They are:

Reception : Edward (Squirrel)

Year 1: Juliet (Dolphin)

Year 2: Evie-E-D (Penguin)

They received a book from the book fair.

The other competition was to send in reading in an unusual place. We had places like on top of a haystack, a checkout in a supermarket and even on a horse! The overall winner was very unique which was reading inside an ice cream van!! Well done to Astraea in Starfish. She received a book from the book fair as a prize.

Mini-beast hotel competition

Thank you so much to all families who took part in the mini-beast hotel competition. There were some great creations which are now in the grounds of the school.  There were three overall winners:

Reception: Erin White (Owl)

Year 1: Henry Norris (Dolphin)

Year 2: Amelia Moffatt (Polar Bears)

These children received a book from the book fair and some animal themed stationery.

Children benefit from fundraising

A huge thank you to the Friends for organising so many exciting fund raising events for the school. Already many new books have been bought and children are benefiting from reading a range of new books which meet their interests.  Below are a couple of photos of children enjoying these:
