What we have been learning………
This week in EYFS we have been looking at how plants grow and change from a seed into a plant. We have explored the different plants in our outdoor area and even grew our own cress! In literacy we wrote using time connectives a diary to show how they had changed over the week. In Art we undertook some observational drawings of plants. In maths we have been continuing to look at recognising numerals in particular teen numbers. Please consolidate these at home too!
We have had a great week continuing with our “Be our Guest” topic. The children are loving all the food related things we have been doing. We planted cress last week in the hope it would grow in time for us to make sandwiches this week. One class out of the three had success. Well done Dolphins! Unfortunately Turtles and Starfish have slower growing cress. We still enjoyed making and eating egg sandwiches though; with or without cress! Alongside this we have been learning how to complete a diary entry. We started by writing about our weekend. We then used these skills to write a cress diary, recording what we did on each day and the progress of the seeds. In Maths this week we have continued to explore capacity. We then moved onto multiplication, grouping into 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and practising counting up. This is a great skill to practise at home to support your child as we continue multiplication next week. In PSHE this week we have been learning about hygiene and keeping clean. We looked at the importance of washing your hands and how easily dirt and germs can spread. This has been useful for the children to recap as we have been preparing food this term.
This week we have been inspired by the story ‘The Lonely Beast’. First of all we began to make predictions about the character before knowing anything about the story. But after reading it we realised our assumptions were incorrect and in fact he was a kind, lonely character. We linked this to other well known stories such as Beauty and the Beast and the Gruffalo. We then wrote a character profile for the beast looking for a friend for him. In Maths we have recalled addition and ways we can solve these equations using our number facts and knowledge. We then applied this to various problems. Our Science ‘Let’s Explore’ day focussed on what plants need to grow. We first discussed parts of a flowering plant and tree. Then we carried out an experiment using different conditions for growth depending on sunlight and water.
Year 2 SATs meetings
Thank you to year 2 parents who attended the meetings about SATs. We hope the meeting was informative and has reassured you about how the assessment tasks will be administered to ensure that your child is unaware of these being any different to the ‘challenges’ regularly set in class. If you were unable to attend the meeting, the Powerpoint presentation used will be uploaded onto our website soon. If you have any other questions or queries please make an appointment to speak to your child’s class teacher. We want it to be a stress free time for the children so they are not aware of the process, therefore we do advise you not to speak about these to your child’s class teacher in front of your child as we are trying to be as discrete as possible.
Out of our tree – Forest School
Unfortunately Out of Our Tree Forest School Company is going to cease business at Downs View due to financial constraints. This is a great loss to the school. Seb Corall the Director of the company has been associated with the school for over 9 years and we are so grateful for the many voluntary hours which Seb and his family and friends gave to make the environment the amazing area that it is today. We will ensure that the children still use the forest school regularly, keeping up the legacy which Seb set up for us. I am sure you will join me in thanking him for his hard work and the impact he has had on children’s well-being and outdoor learning.
The finale for Dance club this week was a show to parent/carers. The children were amazing and worked well together to keep in time and remember the whole routine with smiles all the way! A huge thank you to Miss Brown and Miss Hunt for their hard work in leading the club to such a high standard.
Year 1 Smoothie Sale
Year 1 are holding a smoothie sale straight after school in classrooms on Tuesday 14th May. The children will be making these themselves during the day whilst filming each other like TV Chefs. It would be great if parents could come and support by bringing a little cash for the children to buy one of their delicious smoothies after school.

Can we please remind parents who are using the playground equipment before and after school that they ensure their children are using this safely and are considerate of other children using this. Children are the responsibility of parents/carers until school starts and after school has finished.
We have a number of children in school with nut allergies so would kindly request that nuts are not included in any child’s lunch box. Thank you for your help with this.
We are part of the Healthy School program. School meals are a great choice, but if you do make a packed lunch there are lots of helpful ideas available on the following link https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/recipes/healthier-lunchboxes. Please support us and your child by making healthy choices alongside an odd treat when filling your child’s lunch box. If you would like your child to try school dinners, you can book this in with the office – remember they are free until the end of year 2.
We have changed the date of the Spring Fayre to Friday 17th May 2019in the school hall from 3.15 to 4.30 pm, instead of the 3rd May. You will shortly see the poster below around the school advertising this. If you know anyone that would like to have a stall at this Fayre then please contact us as we have a couple of spaces still available. If you can offer to support by setting up or by supporting on a stall please contact the school office or email the Friends: firstname.lastname@example.org.
