What we have been learning …..

This week in EYFS we have continued our dinosaur themed stories by reading The Dinosaur that Pooped the Planet! In Literacy we used the writing toolkits to create our own dinosaur imaginative adventures which were all very unique! The dinosaurs explored beaches, snowstorms and ate some really interesting things whilst on their journey! In Maths we have been thinking about 1 more. We were given and then created our own starting number from 1 – 10 and then used the tens frame to support us in finding one more than the starting number. We used our own way of recording to represent our findings. We have also been learning a variety of new songs to help us with our Christmas show.

Polite reminder …… Hope you got the letter regarding bringing in costumes for the Christmas show.  Please come and see us if you are having any difficulties. Please send them in by Wednesday 5thDecember. Thank you.

Year 1

Although we are trying not to mention the big C too much, things are beginning to feel a little festive in Year 1. We have started learning songs for our nativity performance and with all parts chosen we are now beginning our rehearsals. We’re sure many of you already know some of the songs! In English we have been exploring a lovely story abouta boy writing to Santa. This gave us the idea to do the same, the children have enjoyed writing about the things they would like for Christmas. In Maths we have continued to explore subtraction, we have learnt how to use a numberline to find the answer to our subtraction equations. We have also enjoyed learning how to type on word on the computer this week. We had a go at changing the font size, style and colour before typing a card insert. We have also been very fortunate to have an outside company provide us with skipping workshops, this on top of our dance lessons has kept us very active!

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have explored, performed and written our own space poems. In Maths we have practised counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to solve multiplication equations. We used the part-part-whole model to show our understanding. On our ‘Let’s Explore’ day we have learnt about the continents and oceans of the world and have made our own globes. We have planted some bulbs in our outdoor area and can’t wait to see them grow in the spring! We will monitor and compare the growth of these alongside growth of some seeds. We have started to practise our Christmas show and are so excited to show you on Monday 10th. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you need any help with costumes as we do have some spares in school.

Year 2 parents

As we are an Infant School, once your child finishes in year 2 they will move on to Kennington Academy or another school.  There is an admission process which parents need to go through to secure a place for year 3 which involves completing an application form on line and submitting this by January.  You can apply from 5thNovemberuntil 15thJanuary 2019. We will holding joint prospective parent school tours which begin on Thursday 18thOctober.  Please see below for other dates- you need to call the school office of either school to book a place.

Date Time Tour begins at:
Friday 4th January 1.30pm Kennington Academy

Midday Supervisor vacancy

We are looking for a midday supervisor to work every lunch time from 11.35am-1pm (Monday-Friday).  If you are interested, please collect an application form from the school office. The closing date is Friday 7thDecember.

Parent and Toddler Leader vacancy

As you are aware Sam our FLO is sadly leaving us on Friday 14thDecember. Sam currently leads our Parent and Toddler and therefore we are looking to appoint somebody with experience of working with young children who would like the opportunity to lead this group.  This takes place every Monday from 1.30pm- 2.50pm.  The leader would need to come in from 12.45pm to prepare and set up. If you are interested, please contact the office to collect an application form.

Maths workshops

Thank you to all parent/carers who attended our Maths workshops both last week and this week. If you were unable to attend and would like to see the presentation given by Mr Horne, this will be on the website very soon.  We are aware that some parents were unable to attend because of childcare issues. We apologise that we cannot supply a crèche but we are keen to ensure you do not miss out.  We will send out a parent mail soon with opportunity to feedback and also make any suggestions about a way forward so that all parents/carers can be included.

Skipping workshop

From our Sports premium funding we were able to put on a skipping workshop for all children. The children had a good time and your child should have brought home a small box of blueberries yesterday.  David the workshop leader ensured that all children worked hard and talked about the importance of keeping fit and healthy and not giving up.  Photographs will be on the website soon.

Infant agility competition

This week five year 2 children took part in an Infant Agility competition at The North School. They had to compete in a variety of activities against other Ashford schools. The activities included standing long jump, soft javelin, tennis ball balance, hit the stumps, target throw and football dribble. They all had lots of fun and were great team players, with lots of spirit – cheering each other on. Miss Thorogood and Mrs Collins were exhausted just watching them! Well done to each child- they were amazing.  Thank you to all parents for supporting.

 Pupil premium

As you may be aware if you are in receipt of certain benefits your child you could be classed as pupil premium which can be determined by filling out a quick form from the office.  This could bring in extra funding to the school to benefit your child and others.  Your circumstances may have changed since your child started school, so it’s always worth checking whether you fit the criteria. Further information can be accessed through the following link.
