What we have been learning………
This week in EYFS we have taken flight with Violet the pilot. In the story she was an inventor of flying machines. This led us to use our imaginations to create a blueprint for our own flying machine. We thought carefully about the design and materials it would be made out of. Within literacy we labelled our design and wrote sentences to explain to others how to construct the machine effectively. In Maths we have been exploring subtraction. We firstly reminded ourselves of the alternative vocabulary i.e. minus, less than, take away. We then used this vocabulary when creating our own subtraction number stories. We recorded these pictorially and then in a part part whole. In P.E we have been consolidating our ball skills by learning how to pass to an opponent through rolling and kicking. We have also enjoyed visiting our new Year 1 classes and had fun when our new teachers came to work with us in our EYFS classrooms.
This week in Year 1 we have been exploring our local area. We looked at some of the buildings we see around Kennington and described them in English. In Science we really enjoyed a walk around the school as we searched for different trees. We used a photo sheet to identify the leaves and then grouped them into evergreen and deciduous. In Maths we have been working hard to tell the time to the hour and half past. It’s great to see that so many children have been practising this at home as one of their homework challenges. We also had a brilliant PE lesson this week with John from Chelsea training academy where we learnt and practised lots of different football skills. This was so much fun, all children came back buzzing with excitement from their sessions. Next week we are going to look at some of the key places in Ashford, such as the Stour Centre, Cineworld and the Designer Outlet. Please see what you can spot whilst you are out and about this weekend and bring in any photos, leaflets or information which you may have about Ashford.
This week in Year 2 we have been busy at Kennington Academy getting to know our new teachers! We have had great fun and feel very excited about the transition to our new school. Within English this week we have explored the changes in the seaside over time, we have sorted what is the same and different and written comparative sentences. Within Maths we have been super active! We have played scoring games and added scores together. We were very lucky to have a Chelsea football workshop -it was so much fun! During our PSHE ‘Let’s Explore’ day we discussed good and bad behaviours and how we should behave. We also discussed the pants rule and reinforced how we need to speak up if something upsets us. Next week is our Circus week! We cannot wait to perfect our end of year show for you all to see on Monday 15th July at 5.30pm at Kennington Academy.
Absence – reminder
If your child is poorly and unable to come to school, please ensure that you inform the office via telephone on our attendance line or via Parentmail. This should be done before school on the first day of absence. Please be aware that we will call you if we haven’t heard from you or may even come to your home as we have a duty of care to ensure that all children who are absent from school are safe and accounted for. If you have taken your child to the doctors it is useful to get an appointment card as proof of this. Remember we can administer prescribed medication so if your child is feeling better but needs medicine, this can be brought to the office and administered as necessary. Attendance is very important to ensure that your child does not miss out on valuable learning time – every minute counts! If you are unsure whether your child can come to school, please call the office and somebody will be able to advise you. Thank you for your support.
Kennington Summer Fayre
Thank you to everyone who came and supported the Friends at the summer fayre on Saturday. It was a very hot day and the children had lots of fun! We raised £633.40 with £240 of this from raffle tickets. It was a great afternoon! This money will fund a range of resources requested by teachers for next year.
This includes a writing shed for outdoors, a range of outdoor equipment and play equipment to be purchased and to fund the family fun day on Monday 22ndJuly which we hope you will be able to come and enjoy for FREE! This is a way of saying thank you for supporting the Friends this year and raising so much money for the benefit of your children.
Some of the year 2 children were part of the choir and Maypole dancing team at the fayre. They put on amazing performances and were an asset to the school, demonstrating their talents. A huge thank you to Miss Anderson for leading the choir and to Mrs Jones at Kennington for leading the Maypole dancing along with Kennington Academy children.
During Eco Club this week we thought about how much plastic is dumped into the ocean every day! We thought about the 4 R’s- Refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle. And how if we all work together we can help to make a huge change to save our seas and creatures that live in it. Miss Cossey and Mrs Little have also teamed up with a group of children to design and make a plastic ocean display- see if you can spot it around the school soon. Keep the sea plastic free!
