What we’ve been up to……

Wow! What an amazing week we have had in EYFS! Our week started off with a real high with our first school trip to Tyland Barn. We began our amazing day by learning the story Tadpole’s Promise which led us on a trail answering questions based on the story while exploring the area. We then had an opportunity to hunt for the caterpillar in the story when we went mini-beast hunting and hunt for the tadpole when we tried table-top pond dipping. The children had a fantastic day and the staff at Tyland Barn said ‘The children were a credit to you today’. What a great way to end our day! Of course it would not have been possible without the support and help from some fantastic parent helpers so thank you! Our week didn’t stop there though. We continued our learning about amazing creatures when we had a visit from some rather strange ones, cockroaches and spiders to name just a few! We have also been writing about our trip and taken part in some fantastic art work which can be enjoyed in the Science exhibition after school today! I think we have been more than busy in just four days but are looking forward to next week already!

This week in Year 1 the children have been continuing the topic of Castles and have been learning about Henry VIII. They started by comparing King Henry to Queen Elizabeth II. The children learnt lots of amazing facts about Henry and were able to create a diary entry from King Henry’s perspective. All the teachers were pleased with the children’s use of past tense and the use of ‘ed’ endings. The children were able to describe Henry VIII using his personality and appearance. In Maths the children have been looking at numbers to 100 and were discussing how these were made up of 10s and 1s.

Year 2 this week we have been very busy writing letters to the Queen of Hearts from the point of Alice. In Maths we have been practised solving multiplication and division problems. We have had an exciting Science week, learning about different habitats around the world and enjoyed visiting different classes and learning with different adults in year 2.  We were very lucky to have taken part in a Science workshop today where we learnt about animals and their habitats, such as meerkats!

We have chicks!

This year we have been part of the Kent Bird box project again but unfortunately have had technical issues which have prevented the coverage being live on the site, although Miss Doyle and Caterpillars have been lucky to have watch the whole experience as this laptop is linked to the bird box.  We are pleased to say that these issues have been resolved just in time and the ten eggs which have been laid in the box have now hatched and we have 10 hungry chicks! You can follow their progress by visiting the following site: www.seenature.org.uk/schools/downs-view-infant-school. The children have been so excited to see the live stream in the hall this week!

Year 2 SATs meeting

Thank you to all parent/carers for coming to our meeting about SATs. We hope that it was informative and you went away reassured.  If you were unable to attend the meeting and would like a copy of the power point presentation, this will be available on the website soon.

A big thank you

This week the children have enjoyed Science workshops which have been fully paid for by the funds raised this year by events run by the Friends.  The three year group trip coaches have also been paid for by funds raised.  Thank you to all parents/carers who made donations and supported these events.  Every penny counts to ensure that your children can enjoy these additional experiences to make learning even more fun! These funds will soon run out and therefore we need to think of new ways to raise money so that we can continue to offer these amazing experiences. Please see the note below from the Friends….

Classes next year

Some parents have been asking about whether we will be mixing classes for next year.  As we explain when we have to do this, we only do this if there is an imbalance which has evolved across the year group causing the need to re-organise classes.  We are pleased to say that this year we will not be mixing the current Reception or Year 1 classes at the end of the year.  Year 2 were mixed at the end of year 1 and will go to year 3 in their current established classes. In term 6, you and the children will find about their new teachers for next year and be involved in lots of transition activities to support them with the changes ahead.

A note from the Friends…….

Please check your children’s bags for Raffle Tickets & Tea Towel Order forms.

We would also like to remind you, that the Friends of Downs View are looking for more Friends who can spare a little time or support with ideas. We would love to hear from you if you have any fundraising ideas or can offer help in any shape or form. Please email us at friendofdownsview@gmail.com

Thanks so much in advance.

Mandy, Francesca and Maureen
