Reception  children’s phonics workshop

Thank you to those parents and carers who joined us to learn phonics alongside their children this week. We hope you found it useful and has helped you to show you how your child is being taught, giving you some ideas of how to help at home.  We value your feedback so please look out for a feedback form via parent mail to return to us.

Reading workshop Friday 13th October

Helping hands day – Sunday 15th October -9-3pm

We will be hosting a helping hands day for staff/parents/volunteers to complete a range of jobs around the school, including painting, gardening, repairing, tidying etc.  If you and/or family members are available to support we would love your help.  If anybody has any unwanted paint which they would like to donate, please bring it in and give it in to the office.  This is an adult only day which will run from 9-3pm.  Mr Corall will also be in the forest area continuing the repair work following the summer damage.

We value your feedback so if you have 10 minutes please visit parent view website and answer a few questions which evaluate Downs View. This will also be available to complete online at parents evening outside each classroom. The website address is:    www.parentview.ofsted.gov.uk.

What we’ve been up to…..

This week in EYFS we have been exploring the story Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson. We thought carefully about the different animals in the story. We learn the correct names for their babies and learnt where we would find their homes. This led us to think about our own homes. We discovered that everyone’s homes are different and the names of some of these homes i.e. bungalow, terraced house. In Maths we continued to count objects but it was a little trickier as we could not move the objects as we counted them so had to be very careful! We have also been very brave and got changed into our PE clothes! We are however still some PE kits missing so please remember to send in shorts and t-shirts if you have not done so already!

A big thank you too for still encouraging your children to come in on their own. The corridor is so much less congested which has made it much easier for your child to be independent!

The Kentish Express photographer came in to school this week to take the First Class photos, these photos of your child’s class will appear in next week’s newspaper (12th October).

This week Year 1 have enjoyed learning about fish and amphibians. We have deceived what each have and started to think about how different features benefit them.

In Design and Technology we have started to create our under the sea costumes, following our previous plans and ideas. We’ve thought about our families this week and in RE we have learnt about the promises God gave Abraham. In Maths we have started learning about number bonds to 10 which has been a little challenging. Lots of practical activities will help us learn these even more.

Year 2- This week has flown by! We have learnt so much! In English we have explored recipes and written our own for how to make a fruit salad. In Maths we have started to learn about addition, adding 2 2-digit numbers together. In RE we have thought about how we can care for others including pets, friends and ourselves. Within phonics we have started to learn the various rules of adding the suffixes ed and ing to change verb tenses. Let’s hope next week is just as fun!

Thank you for all of the food donations for our local charity.  It’s not too late to send in some tinned/perishable food. This week we have been learning lots about harvest and festivals in assembly. Yesterday we learnt how flour and bread is made and with a little extra magic we were able to make our own bread which was served with the with the school dinners!
