What we have been learning………

EYFS

Wow what a busyweek we have had in EYFS! We have all been very excited to start our new topic of ‘Taking flight!’This week’s story Handa’s Surprise focused on how we travel on foot from one place to another. This story is set in an African village so this also led us to think about what type of vehicles and modes of transport that we may find in other countries. In Literacy we retold the story using our writing toolkit framework remembering to include the character, setting, problem and resolution. In Maths we thought about how to share out a given amount between two animals in order to support the animals in the story to be fair! We have also begun in PE practising team games in preparation for sports day!

A reminder…. Not all PE kits have returned. Please bring these in with plimsolls as we are going outside as well as in the hall for PE this term.

Year 1

We’ve had a super week back to school in Year 1. We launched the week with a Geography day where we learnt all about the UK and the four countries within it. We then took this learning into our English where we have been reciting and recalling facts. The children have amazed us with what they can remember! Did you know that the titanic was built in Northern Ireland? In Maths we have been exploring half of a shape as well as an amount.  We’ve worked so hard on this so now we are now moving onto quarters. On Wednesday we were all lucky enough to go for a walk around the school to find wild flowers. Ask your children what we found and see if they can remember some of the fun old folk tales we learnt about them! We discovered that daisies were the most common on the school grounds.

Year 2

This week in year 2 has been busy! In our English we have written questions to the year 3 teachers, we were lucky enough to go to Kennington Academy to ask the questions on meeting the children’s new teachers for September. We then wrote diary entries of this exciting event! In Maths we have used our number facts to 10 whilst adding 2 and 3 one digit numbers together. We practised making number bonds and partitioning numbers to make 10 as our first step to bridging 10 in addition. Our let’s explore day was Art where we have explored and created our own art linked to the beach. Please can all children have PE kits in school and especially as we are practising for sports day which is coming around very quickly!

Eco-Club

During Eco- Club this week we planted a range of plants in our hanging baskets and sowed flower seeds in our chest of drawers. We are looking to raise money to buy a water butt for each year group’s outdoor area. Next week we will be selling second hand school items in the school playground on Friday 14th June, after school, all donations will go towards the water butts. Keep recycling!

Farewell to our FLO Mrs Sarah Howard

As mentioned in previous newsletters, we have said goodbye and thank you to Sarah Howard our FLO today.  Sam Ansell will return as our FLO from Monday. She will be on the playground every morning so please pop by and say hello to her.  She will be available every morning and will be working in class every afternoon.

Father’s Day Gift Sale – Monday 10thJune

The children will get a chance to come and visit the Friends to buy a gift for their Dad or special man in their life for Father’s Day.  The gift will be wrapped and given to the children to bring home.

If the children would like to take part they need to bring £2 on Monday.

Home learning

Please look out for a parent mail with a summary of what your child will be taught this term.  There are also some suggestions about that you can do at home. Please try to complete as many of the suggestions as possible.  Reading and learning words sent home as much as possible is key to your child’s progress – even just 10 minutes a night can make such a difference!

Charity Skydive

Well done to Cath Chandler (mum of Isabelle in Snow Leopard) for completing a Skydive on Monday 27thMay to raise money for Padua Ward at the William Harvey hospital. Cath is a paediatric nurse on the ward and is fund raising for new entertainment equipment such as DVD players, DVDs, televisions, headphones and equipment that make a child’s experience in hospital just that little bit more manageable. What a great cause and how brave is she. If you would like to donate and support this fantastic cause please visit: hhtps://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/padua
