Downs View’s Got Talent

Does your child have a special talent they would like to share with their class.  This could be playing an instrument, performing a poem, reading an extract of a book, dancing, singing, performing magic, filming yourself performing your talent to show your class or any other talent they may have!
This celebration of talent will take place on Tuesday 19thJune, so make sure your child brings in everything they need on the day! One child from each class will be chosen to perform again in a final to the whole school on Tuesday 26thJune.

What we’ve been up to………

This week in EYFSwe have begun our topic of ‘Over the rainbow’. The week started with a mysterious box arriving that was rather large. We used all of our senses to try and guess what we thought may be inside and then wrote down our thoughts. It was very strange as even though it was very large it was very light and didn’t make a sound when we shook it! We also read the story of the Rainbow Fish which made us think about how everybody is different but special and we all have our own unique qualities!

In Maths we used the rainbow fish to help us think about halving. We used given numbers and halved them by sharing the given amount between two small fish i.e. half of 8 is 4. We also found out that some numbers cannot be shared fairly and if this is the case we end up with a remainder.

We have also been creative by making our very own paper plate rainbow fish.

Don’t forget to bring all P.E kits back with plimsolls as we are outside now for P.E and sports day is so very close! Also please don’t forget to bring in a water bottle each day for your children. The weather is getting warmer and they need to stay hydrated!!

Year 1we have enjoyed launching our new topic with a walk round the local area. Thank you to all the parents who came along to help. The children have recognised the local landmarks and got some bearings as to where the school is situated. In Design and Technology we designed a bridge, thinking about the most appropriate materials that would support the weight of a toy car. In Music we have been exploring sounds of the ocean and started to learn a famous song from the Disney film Moana. In Science we have explored different parts of the human body and are starting to label them.

Year 2We enjoyed our time off from school but are happy to be back learning morning. We launched our topic by discussing our favourite toys. We have started to think about what toys were like in the past 100 years or so and how they have changed. We decided that we want to carry out research to find out more. Within DT we have thought about wheeled vehicles and how they enable them to move, learning the new vocabulary of wheel, axle and chassis. In English we have started to read ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl, we have described the characters using descriptive language. We have started to think of ideas of new tricks they could play on each other and used drama to re-enact them. In Maths we have rounded numbers to the nearest 10 and used this knowledge to estimate and check answers to calculations.

Small steps

Year 2 children have taken part in their first session of road safety this week. Thank you to parents/grandparents who volunteered to support this.  The children were impeccably behaved and have learnt lots of tips to keep them safe – please encourage them to show you what they have learnt!
