Welcome back – we hope you all had a great summer holiday!

The children have come back to school ready to learn and full of energy and enthusiasm which is great!  They are settling well into their new classes and getting used to the new layout of classrooms. The move of year 1 and 2 classrooms has involved a huge clear out and a fresh start for children as well as staff.  Downs View team have worked hard during the summer to make the school an outstanding environment for your child to learn in.

Baby news

We are pleased to tell you that Miss Stanley and Mr Horne have had a baby boy Albie who was born on 1st August. Miss Stanley is enjoying being a Mummy at home with Albie.

Wedding bells rang!

Congratulations to Miss Williams who works in Starfish class as a TA who got married during the summer holidays and is now Mrs Simmonds.

Arriving at school

As you are aware the bell will ring at 8.40am every day and we urge you to have your child in school by then.  We allow another 10 minutes before the gate is shut. Please do not let other parents and children through if you are leaving and the gate is shut as this is a safeguarding issue.  Classroom doors will be shut and registers will have been sent. We understand that on the odd occasion you may be late which cannot be helped and then you will need to come via the front entrance. This ensures your child is marked in and is safe. Your child will be expected to go to their class alone but there will be a member staff around at the entrance.

Collection at the end of day

Please can we ask for year 1 parents to wait at the gate at the bottom of the ramp until 2.55pm so that the children are not distracted during the last part of the day. Please can Year 2 parents wait in the areas identified on the playground signs this week.  We politely ask for all adults collecting to come close enough for the teachers/teaching assistants to see who they are releasing each child to. They will not let any child go to an adult on the telephone or too far away.  This is to safeguard your children and hope that you will respect this.

Relief Cleaner

We are looking for a relief cleaner who would be available to cover sickness of current cleaners at short notice; the hours are from 3pm – 5pm.  If you are interested or know of anyone who is can you please let Nicola in the office know.

8.20 Club.

Payment for this club is now due. The fee has been increased to £20 per term, 6 terms per year and the club has an earlier start time of 8.20am for your convenience.  If you are able to please pay the fee directly into out bank account details of which can be obtained from Mrs Popham or Mrs Simmonds in 8.20 Club or the school office.

New scooter and bike racks

We hope you like our new scooter and bike racks- it’s great to see so many of you already using them.  You are welcome to use a lock for bikes/scooters if you would like to.  They are secure during the day but the school cannot be responsible for them when the gates are open.  These have been purchased from the Travel Plan bid which Mrs Collins applied for last term.  There are also going to be wellie racks and an adult bike shed for staff which will arrive soon.  Please ensure that your child has wellies in school so that they can go out in all weathers.

Fencing across the playing field

We have had a fence put up across our playing field as a safety measure and to help prevent trespassing out of school hours.  We are aware that there are more areas of our boundary which will need to be addressed and this is in our school maintenance plan.

Attendance

We were so pleased with our overall attendance percentage at the end of last year.  It was 96.59% which is outstanding.  A huge thank you to parents for your persistent effort in avoiding taking your children out of school for appointments or events unless absolutely necessary.  We are aware that your child may get childhood illnesses and therefore cannot attend school but we would like to praise parents for bringing their children back as soon as they are well enough.  Children can attend with a cold or cough. We do not authorise any holiday during the school year and you could be subject to a fine if you choose to take your child out of school and this results in poor attendance overall.  We will be rewarding all children with 99% or above attendance each term with some key events at the end of term 2, 4 and 6. More information will follow this term once our new attendance policy has been finalised.  Every day and minute counts so please support us in bringing in your child every day unless they are poorly. Our school target this year is 98% and with your help we can achieve it!

Forest School area

As you may be aware we are fortunate to have Forest School status and have a fantastic area at the front of the school.  This is maintained well by Seb Corall who is the director of ‘Out Of Our Tree’ and runs weekly Forest School sessions for some year 1 and 2 pupils. Unfortunately we have had some trespassers over the summer who have caused extensive damage to lots of the equipment and the area including the trees, parachute, pond, toilet, chair and table.  We do have cameras and the footage is currently with the Police and local secondary schools to try to identify who they are.  The damage is going to cost the school and Seb hundreds of pounds to repair. Please can I ask that if you see anybody on our site out of school hours to call the police. Also if you do have teenagers, please remind them that this area is out of bounds and for school use only.

Free Milk in School – Pupil Premium children

If your child is under 5 years old they will already receive free milk until their 5th birthday.  However if your child is Pupil Premium the school receives extra funding for your child and we can  pay for your child to have milk at break time.  If you would like your child to receive this free milk each day please contact Helen in the office or Sarah Collins, Deputy Head.  If your child is not Pupil Premium but you would still like them to have milk each day please log on to the Cool Milk website where you will be able to register and pay for milk.

Changes/update to sickness policy

Following advice from public health and to bring us in line with Kennington CE Academy and guidance from Kent – children with diarrhea and/or vomiting should now be kept off school at least 48 hours after their symptoms have gone. This should prevent the virus from being spread to others.  This only applies to stomach bugs.

School lunches

Just a reminder that every child is entitled to a free school meal everyday if they would like it.  If you would like to take up this opportunity, please call or email the school office and this can be arranged. The majority of the children have school dinners and they give your child a balanced meal every day. If you do choose to supply packed lunch for your child, please can we remind you to ensure there is a variety of foods and sugary foods/treats should be kept to a minimum.

Stanley Baker Studios – School photographs

Stanley Baker Studios will be in school on Tuesday 26th September to take individual photographs of the children.  If you have any younger siblings or children at the Junior School you would like included in the photo please come to school hall from 8am. We have informed the Junior School that some siblings may arrive slightly late. Breakfast Club will be in part of the hall from 7.45am so parents should enter through the far end door of the hall at the side of the school.
