What we have been learning …..

This week in EYFS we have been on some imaginative journeys with Stickman! We read the story and recalled all the different adventures he had been on. We decided to use the writing toolkit to create our own Stickman story. We had to think about where the story was set, the problem that occurred and the resolution. In Maths we have been recalling the names of 2D shapes and their properties. We used these different 2D shapes to create our own pictures. In PSHE we have been thinking about how to express our feelings and what makes us feel happy and sad.

We require a little help from you:

As the weather is becoming wetter and colder please encourage your child to put their own coats on and do them up and put their own gloves and scarves on. Thank you.

Year 1

Year 1 have really enjoyed exploring autumn this week through English. We had great fun experiencing a bonfire in the Forest area, tasting hot chocolate and marshmallows and going on a wellie walk around the field. We used our senses to describe what we could see, hear, smell and feel and was able to create our own Autumn poems. In Maths we have been practising addition calculations and considered the different number equations we can use, as well as part-part whole models. We also tried to spot patterns in number sequences. During Music we have begun exploring the Disney movie Fantasia. We had to try and recognise and predict different sounds and instruments that were used and why they may have been chosen.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have learnt about Neil Armstrong and his significance to modern day life. We learnt about his life and his achievement being the first man to walk on the moon. We thought about his feelings and used this to write speech and thoughts he could have had during his quest. We wrote a letter to someone back home whilst he was on his way back to Earth. We were fascinated by his journey! In Maths we have continued to develop our knowledge of pounds and pence and have calculated different ways to make amounts, compared amounts and have found totals using addition. In Music we have continued to explore pitch we created puppets and sang the Humpty Dumpty song in a range of pitches to show the keyparts of the nursery rhyme. In our ‘Let’s Explore’ day we classified items in our environments as towhether they were living, dead or have never been alive. We then thought about habitats and have started to explore a microhabitat and have discussed the mini-beasts that live in different conditions.

Children In Need – Friday 16 November

The School Council have discussed this year’s theme and have decided that they would like to children to dress up in colourful, spotty or vibrant clothing or they can wear their pyjamas. We are asking families to make their own donations if they want to outside of school.

Year 2 parents

As we are an Infant School, once your child finishes in year 2 they will move on to Kennington Academy or another school. There is an admission process which parents need to go through to secure a place for year 3 which involves completing an application form online and submitting it. You can apply from 5th November until 15th January 2019. We are holding joint prospective parent school tours. Please see below for the dates of these. Please book in with the hosting school to make an appointment. You are welcome to take your child with you if you would like to.

Governors update

We have a strong Governing body who are volunteers to challenge and support the strategic direction of the school. The chair has summarised the latest actions made by the Governing body which you can access via the following link: http://www.downs-view.kent.sch.uk/governors/
We currently have a vacancy for a new co-opted Governor and we would welcome enquiries from you as parents/carers or members of the community as to what the role involves. Please let the Chair Mrs Felicity Moore know, via the School Office if you would like to attend as an observer at the next board meeting on 29 November 2018.

Pre-loved Sale

Thank you to the Friends for organising Saturday’s Pre-loved sale. This was very well attended and raised £168.98. The money raised will go towards reading books for each class.

Exciting News

We are pleased to inform you that Mrs Norman is expecting her second baby. She is planning to take her maternity leave from February. I am sure you will join us in congratulating Mr and Mrs Norman at this exciting time.

Turtles Class

Mr Horne is our school Maths Mastery leader. He will be spending time every Thursday working and supporting other schools. Downs View will reap the benefits from this collaborative working. This will mean that he will not be teaching in class on a Thursday. Mrs Somerville will be teaching the class on this day.

Sickness – Diarrhoea and vomiting

We are currently experiencing lots of diarrhoea and vomiting bugs within school. As a school we would like to minimise this and therefore have adopted the NHS guidelines; they advise that you are most infectious from when the symptoms start until 2 days after they have passed. We therefore have a 48 hour policy, children should not return for 48 hours following any incident of diarrhoea and/or vomiting. More useful information on this can be found on the NHS link: www.nhs.uk/conditions/diarrhoea-and-vomiting/

School Dinners

It would be really useful for our school dinner team if you could complete the Caterlink school lunch survey, this can be accessed through the following
link: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/MYVMYMV
Please find below this year’s Christmas menu which will be on Wednesday 12th December
