What we’ve been up to……..
This week in EYFS we have begun our topic of Treasure Tales. We started the week by reading the story of The Three Little Pigs. We thought carefully about the characters within the story and made our own Wanted Wolf posters as the pigs felt that he needed to come back and apologise for ruining their homes! In Maths we had fun huffing and puffing to blow the piggy skittles down to work out how many pigs the wolf could knock down and who had knocked down the most and least. We have also had fun listening to how the school has changed in 40 years from a variety of visitors this week and can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like to have such classrooms half the size of what they are now with no outdoor learning space! We have also been consolidating the sounds that we have introduced so far and have been so impressed with the children’s recognition of these. Thanks for helping your child to learn these over half term.
In Year One this week the children have been creating senses poems. They had a magnificent bonfire party at the start of the week and used their senses to describe tasting marshmallows and hot chocolate and watching sparklers. The children then used this skill to create their own sense poem even using the skill of alliterative words. In Maths this week the children have been solving addition and subtraction equations by using a ten frame and representing the problem in the part-part whole model. They worked on using the skill of being able to write all of the addition equations and the inverse subtraction equations from one problem.
Year 2 really enjoyed our welly walk outside identifying different signs of autumn. We used this to help us think of alliterative phrases for autumn objects in our poems. In Maths we have been learning about measure of length and mass using centimetres, meters, kilograms and grams. We have explored how to estimate amounts and measure them accurately. We enjoyed the launch of our new topic ‘Lets celebrate’ by starting to learn our Holi dance during PE.
Remembrance Day
Poppies will be on sale in school next week. There are also some other Remembrance day items for sale such as rulers, bracelets etc. These are being sold for a £1 donation
Flu nasal immunisations – Years 1 & 2 – 20th October
As you may be aware there were problems with some children not having the Flu immunisation after parents had completed the online consent form. This issue has been raised with the school nurse immunisation team and they are investigating this. If your child received the nasal immunisation on the 20th October they were given a ‘certificate’. If you are unsure whether your child has been immunised please contact the school nurse team on 0300 1235205.
Friends of Downs View
After the successful sale of Halloween biscuits the amount of money raised totalled £123.43. Thank you to all those who helped on the day assisting Mandy our Chair of the Friends with the sale and to those of you who supported the event buying the biscuits.
The Friends have a new email address: friendsofdownsview@gmail.com.
Our next key event will be our Christmas Fayre on Friday 9th December, which will require lots of helping hands to prepare, set up or run a stall. If you can help in anyway, please contact Mandy on the above email address.
As you may remember I mentioned that we needed new trustees for the Friends to continue to operate as a charity. Mandy Dunkerley is the Chair and we are pleased to say that we have had 3 other parents who have volunteered to fill the other places of Vice-chair, Treasurer and Secretary. These need to be nominated and officially voted in which will take place next week. Look out for a letter from Mandy on behalf of the Friends about this next week!
Firework night safety
The children learnt some safety tips in assembly and in class this week about keeping safe when watching fireworks. If you are attending any firework displays or having fireworks this weekend we hope you have fun and are all kept safe in the process.
Please remember to:
- Stand back as far as you can from any fireworks being set off
- Ensure anybody handling a firework wear gloves
- Pets are kept indoors
- Fireworks are kept in a tin out of the reach of children
- You never return to a firework even if it hasn’t gone off!
Our 40th Birthday celebrations
A huge thank you to ex-pupils, parents and staff who have visited the school this week, taking a trip down memory lane, whilst also talking to the children about the school in the past. The children have loved hearing all about how different many things were. Our tea party will have been the finale and we hope that you enjoyed looking at the many different photos/ articles/memories of the school during the last 40 years. Our main birthday cake used as part of our celebration was designed by Lola Osbourne from Starfish Class, the winner of our cake competition. This was cut up for all to enjoy but a replica of her cake is being made for her to keep as her prize and enjoy with her family next week. Thank you to all children who took part.
This is the winning design:
