Welcome to Year 2

Friday 8th September 2017

Dear Parents/ carers,

Welcome to Year 2! We hope you had a lovely summer. We have had an amazing first week back and the children are settling in well. The home learning looks fantastic! Thank you for your hard work with your child on this over the holidays – they are displayed in the corridor outside of each classroom. There will be an opportunity for you to see your child’s classroom and displays at our parent drop in next Friday 15th September from 3-4pm. (a letter from your child will follow with more details).

I would like to introduce myself; my name is Robyn Marsh and I am the new Year 2 Team Leader. I have been teaching for 3 years and previously completed my teacher training here at Downs View. I am very pleased to take on this new role and am excited to support your child on their learning journey this year. As you know at Downs View we have an ‘open door’ policy, so if you have any comments, compliments or queries, please feel free to pop by before or after school and have a chat!

There are a few things below which will help to settle your child to year 2:

Multi-sports kit- Thursdays: Please remember to send your child to school with a kit for Thursdays which can stay at school. This needs to be warm clothes with trainers which are suitable to be used outside on the field. This outdoor kit will be in addition to the usual indoor PE kit. Also, if your child wears earrings, these will need to be removed for PE lessons or taped over with microporous tape for safety. Please ensure all items are named and in a separate bag.

Cold weather clothing: As our weather is always changing, it is important that all children have the necessary attire; wellies (to stay in class), a warm coat, hat, gloves so that they can partake in all aspects of their learning inside and outside. We like to get outside whatever the weather!

Home learning: Your child will be given spellings every week which support the weekly phonics and spelling and grammar (SPAG) rules taught in class. Alongside this, Maths and English Home Learning will be given on an alternative week basis and sent home in their Home Learning books. This will be given on a Friday and should be handed in by the following Wednesday to ensure the teacher has time to mark and return it. Please don’t hesitate to ask your class teacher any questions if you are unsure about the Home Learning. We are encouraging independence with changing reading books and this will continue exactly the same as it did in Year 1, with opportunities to change their book daily or once it has been read.

Challenge Badges: There will be opportunities for the children to earn different badges throughout the year, such as: Inventors, Friendship and Helpers. These will be a result of tasks they complete in the classroom and they will be awarded in assembly on a Friday. These promote responsibility and independence, which are key foci throughout Year 2.

I hope this information will help your child and you to settle into year 2. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or myself.

I look forward to working with you and your child during the year.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best Wishes

Robyn Marsh
